Randy Jensen is a study in persistent engineering and a stubborn refusal to let the Pacific Ocean have the last word. His R2AK career began on a 2019 road trip through Baja when he and his son, Lionel, impulsively bought a MacGregor 26D in San Diego. Since then, Randy has become a fixture of the race, creating a race resume including one of the few paddlewheel drives in R2AK history, a COVID-shortened run in 2022, and a 2024 triumph where they finally rang the bell in Ketchikan.
Now going solo for 2026, Team O Race is Randy’s pivot to the Windrider 17, a trimaran he considers the ultimate senior’s boat. A tool and die maker by trade, Randy doesn’t just buy gear; he manufactures solutions. His boat is a laboratory of forward-facing efficiency, allowing him to steer with his feet and manage lines without the cockpit scramble of a traditional monohull. It is a setup that lets him thrive on the water while his 6th-iteration-pedal-drive, meticulously tuned to a 50 RPM sweet spot, handles the calms.

What’s the story behind your boat?
It’s a great seniors boat. You sit facing forward, steering with your feet, hands free to handle lines. It’s allowed me to keep doing it, to thrive, and introduce grandchildren to it.
What’s the biggest unknown for you right now?
The wind.
