This team started with a boat in a driveway and a neighbor with questions. Five years, one WA360 race, and one terrible maritime pun later, they’re sailing a Hobie Tandem Island to Alaska.

First things first, why Race to Alaska?
We love adventure, sailing, and nature, especially on the water type, so when we first learned of this race 3 (or 5) years ago, we set our sights on it. There is a bit more to it than that, but that’s enough for now.

As I mentioned in our application, my dad went through the passage to Alaska at 18 years old aboard the vessel Northstar. He was employed by the Department of the Interior, they brought supplies to the native villages on the Alaskan Coast and out to the Aleutian Islands. I grew up on stories from this voyage.

What’s going to break first—and what’s your plan when it does?
Maybe our repaired Ama (we’ll carry patches)or Aka (find a local welder), or maybe the rudder lines (we’re screwed), hopefully only the rudder pins, we carry a few extras.
